Windows 8 Pre-Beta Supports Custom Images for Metro Background

that users were certainly keen on having available for them, namely customization of the Metro background.

While you can easily change the theme or background of the desktop, with Windows 7 themes supported in the new desktop client, you find yourself stuck when it comes to making a similar move with the Metro background as well.

That happens in the Developer Preview, but is bound to change when the first beta release of Windows 8 arrives, and the first steps in this direction have been made starting with the pre-beta release of Windows 8, it seems.

In the new builds of the client, one can change the background in Metro, though it appears that the use of custom images was not yet implemented.

Windows 8

There are eight pre-defined backgrounds available to choose from, though setting a custom image as the background might prove more than difficult to achieve.

There is no support for usual .png images, for example, but only for 8-Bit photos. Furthermore, there is way to actually convert an image to 8-bits and then use it as a background, simply because the system will automatically convert its color to match the metro color of one’s choice.

Basically, regardless the selected image, you will get a green colored one when selecting green as the default Metro color, and so forth.

Unlike the Developer Preview, which stores backgrounds in a shsxs.dll file, the pre-beta builds of Windows 8 store them in an imageres.dll file, winunleaked.tk explains.

However, it’s unclear whether this applies only to the pre-beta version of the platform, or the beta release will also include it.

One way or the other, since we’re still many months away from the actual Windows 8 release, we should expect for these aspects to be addressed in due time. After all, we are fond of being able to personalize our computers in every possible way we want it.

Those who would like to get a taste of the Windows 8 Developer Preview will find it available on Softpedia here.

Download Waterfalls, Rocks, or Candlelight Themes to Personalize Windows 7

Waterfalls theme for Windows 8
Enlarge picture
Windows 7 users have a wide range of personalization options available for them, the most appealing of which involves downloading and installing of themes for their PCs.

Some new themes are now available for those who are into changing the looks of their desktop to fit their mood or the outside weather.

Depending on the chosen theme, they will also benefit from new system sounds, a welcomed change at some times, that’s for sure.

One of the new themes available for Windows 7 (though it should work with Windows 8 Developer Preview as well, that’s for sure), comes from photographer David S. Sommers and features close-up images of various geological specimens.

The colors of these close-ups of polished agate, jasper, and other rocks will bring into your mind worlds outside this earth, or fantastic abstract paintings, Microsoft explains.

For those who would rather dream of the open, there is a waterfalls theme available for download, with lots of open spaces to enjoy, and with some other benefits as well.

“Gurgling canyon creeks, rushing mountain streams, and cascading, terraced rivers: Waterfalls in all their glorious diversity are featured in this free theme for Windows 7,” Microsoft explains.

For those who would rather stay indoors but still want a taste of nature, there are lots of fruits to enjoy, also in the form of a theme for their desktop PCs.

“Glistening grapes, blueberries shimmering with delicate droplets of water, lemons as bright as the sun, pomegranates gleaming with vitamins and antioxidants. You want fruit. You want this fruit. Get it free for your Windows 7 desktop,” the theme’s description reads.

And there is also a theme fit for the holiday season, the Candlelight theme, bringing to your PC’s desktop the simplicity of a meditation retreat, for example.

“These serene images of candlelight evoke mystery and warmth in a variety of settings, from the coziness of a fireplace mantel to the spare simplicity of a meditation retreat. Illuminate the wintry gloom by adding this free Windows 7 theme to your desktop,” Microsoft says.

The Macro World of Rocks theme is available for download from Softpedia here.

The Waterfalls theme is available for download from Softpedia here.

The Fresh Fruit theme is available for download from Softpedia here.

Windows 8 Componentized - Windows Embedded Standard v.Next Preview in Early 2012

Windows Embedded
Enlarge picture
Microsoft is gearing up to enable early adopters to start testing the next major iteration of Windows Embedded Standard in early 2012.
According to the Redmond company, a Community Technology Preview of Windows Embedded Standard v.Next will launch in the first quarter of 2012.

However, at this point in time, a specific release date for the first CTP of Windows Embedded Standard 7’s successor was not provided.

What’s important to note is the fact that the first testing milestone of Windows Embedded Standard v.Next will be offered to developers, much in the same manner as Windows 8 Developer Preview.

The software giant reveals that it is packing all the power, familiarity and reliability of the Windows operating system into Windows Embedded Standard v.Next.

Of course, as is the case with older versions of Windows Embedded Standard, Windows OS components will be highly customizable and in componentized form.

It’s very interesting to see the relationship between Windows 8 and Windows Embedded Standard v.Next.

Here’s what the company confirmed so far “Windows Embedded Standard v.Next will deliver technologies for customized, rich user interfaces, enhanced always-on connectivity, and all of the management and security functionality provided by Windows 8.”

Personally, I was expecting Microsoft to apply the same strategy for Windows Embedded Standard v.Next and Windows 8 as it did for Windows Embedded Standard 7 and Windows 7. I sent some questions over to one of my contacts with Microsoft, and I’ll provide an update to this article as soon as I get a reply.

In addition to the details mentioned above, Windows Embedded Standard v.Next will also feature ARM architecture support out of the box, according to Microsoft.

The RTM Build of Windows Embedded Standard v.Next will hit general availability three quarters after Windows 8 becomes generally available for PCs.

It doesn’t really matter when you start counting, Microsoft appears to have set the Windows Embedded Standard v.Next release date sometime in 2013. No specific deadlines were disclosed.

UPDATE: I asked whether Windows Embedded Standard v.Next will feature the Metro platform and support Windows 8 Metro apps, but Microsoft says it's not providing any specifics at this time.

Windows 8 Bootkit Demoed

Windows 8 bootkit demoed

Windows 8 was supposed to arrive with a secure boot, but it seems that things might not be like that after all, and the first demonstration of how the User Account Control (UAC) in Windows 8 Developer Preview can be defeated has emerged into the wild.

This is none other than the Stoned Lite bootkit that Austrian security researcher Peter Kleissner has been working on for the past few weeks.

Softpedia already reported on the matter, as Kleissner announced about a week ago that he planned on bringing its proof-of-concept to the MalCon conference set to take place in India on November 25th.

Since that day has come, the demonstration emerged as well, and you can have a look at the clip at the bottom of this article.

For those out of the loop, we should note that Stoned Lite was designed to infect the MBR, which is not being verified in legacy startup.

However, the bootkit will store components outside the normal file system, and will have startup files hooked before Windows actually starts.

It was also developed so as to patch the password validation function, thus enabling the use of any password with any account.

The bootkit remains active in the memory, and can be launched from an USB drive or even from a CD.

In Windows 8, Microsoft plans on including a variety of new security features, starting with the UEFI-based secure boot, which is mandatory for all OEMs who plan on being UEFI-certified.

The SmartScreen filtering has been improved for Windows 8 and for Internet Explorer, and applications and ULRs are being checked against a database.

Peter Kleissner, however, proves that there still are some flaws in Microsoft’s products, and that the company should consider adding more security features into the mix.

Stoned Lite is actually the second bootkit that the Austrian developer created. The first of them, Stoned, affects all Windows systems from Windows 2000 to Windows 7, and has its source code available on Kleissner’s website.

Intel Xeon E5-1600 and E5-2600 Won’t Show Up Until March 2012 – Report

Intel processor based on the Sandy Bridge-E architecture Enlarge picture - Intel processor based on the Sandy Bridge-E architecture
We all knew that Intel is having troubles with implementing SAS in its next-generation server platform code named Romley, but we would have never guessed that it would take the chip maker as long as March to resolve these issues.
Of course that without its chipsets being ready, Intel also can’t release the Xeon processors using it, so these too are delayed.

According to DigiTimes, both the Xeon E5-2600 and E5-1600 series CPUs and the C600 chipsets will make their official debut in the first week of March 2012, which is a full quarter later that what Intel said initially.

The good news however is that the problems are gradually being resolved, so when the end product ships there shouldn’t be any more issues to be resolved, which is always a good thing in the server industry.

Logitech Mini Boombox Finally Selling for $100 (74.33 Euro)

Logitech Mini Boombox Enlarge picture - Logitech Mini Boombox
We spotted the Logitech Mini Boombox back at the onset of this month (November, 2011) but we weren't exactly sure of when sales might start.

The announcement had given this month, November, as the time of arrival, but that could mean anything from immediately to late in the month.

The latter turned out to be the case, as the wireless, Bluetooth speaker has now been put up for order at the price of $100 (74.33 Euro).

Details can be found here, but for those who want a quick rundown, the Mini Boombox is compatible with any A2DP-supporting device and can run for up to ten hours on the USB-chargeable battery.

It has a backlit touch control panel and a built-in mic for speakerphone functionality too.

Just make sure you have the money ready when you place the order.

28nm NVIDIA GPU Roadmap Revealed

NVIDIA GPU roadmap
Enlarge picture
Leaks and rumors about what NVIDIA has in store have not been absent, but one has finally arisen that provides the exact plans of the company in regards to the 28nm manufacturing process.

28nm is the technology that both Advanced Micro Devices and NVIDIA rely on for their new series of graphics processing units (GPUs).

This report has now shown precisely how NVIDIA plans to have its Kepler advance.

The high-end chip will have a smaller die than the massive Fermi and will bear the name GK104.

With 384-bit memory support, it can churn out 2 TFLOPS (30% more than GTX 580) and will be ready by the middle of next year.

Unfortunately, the prowess comes at the price of a high power consumption, 250W, which makes one wonder how much energy the GK110, a dual GX104, will need (will appear soon after).

Much sooner than GK104 will arrive the GK107, the first model as it were, which is a notebook part, with a memory interface of 128 bits and PCI Express 2 support (other GK chips have PCI Express Generation 3 support).

The GK106 will come second, a mid-range GPU, featuring 256-bit memory. Along with the GX107, it will show up at some point during the second quarter of 2012.

So far, the Santa Clara company seems to have similar designs as AMD, but the similarities end at the end of 2012 / early 2013, when NVIDIA will again launch a GPU with a massive die: GX112, with 512-bit memory.

So far, things sound optimistic, but there is always a catch and, in this case, it is TSMC that might cause disruptions to this plan, as well as AMD's own.

Many fear that the nightmare behind the 40nm low chip yields, which hit both companies very hard last year, will repeat with 28nm.

The first signs are already showing
in fact, as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is already experiencing a high demand while producing only 20,000 units per month.

iPhone 5 Won’t Be Immune to Malware, Security Buff Suggests

Bruce Schneier
Enlarge picture
Bruce Schneier, an American cryptographer, computer security specialist, and writer, has made a blog entry about smartphone security lately. In it, he stresses that Apple’s iPhones won’t be more secure (than Android) because of the rules imposed by Apple on the iTunes App Store.

His blog post covers smartphones in general, not just the iPhone. Schneier believes that “smart phones are going to become the primary platform of attack for cybercriminals in the coming years.”

“As the phones become more integrated into people's lives -- smart phone banking, electronic wallets -- they're simply going to become the most valuable device for criminals to go after,” he writes. “And I don't believe the iPhone will be more secure because of Apple's rigid policies for the app store.”

One of the primary concerns is jailbreaking, and how it can be used to put malware on the iPhone, rather than just open it up to third-party software that Apple doesn’t allow in its App Store.

As Apple prepares to launch an NFC-enabled iPhone next year, if the rumors are to be believed, one of the Cupertino giant’s primary concerns will undoubtedly be tied to security.

But the question is: what can Apple do to strengthen the security of iOS without compromising on the user experience?

There has been little malware targeting the iOS operating system ever since the launch of the original iPhone in 2007.

Yet the software hasn’t been immune to attacks. In fact, it’s been anything but that in the face of hackers like the iPhone Dev Team.

The only thing that’s kept malware from getting into iPhones was the fact that jailbreakers had good intentions in cracking the iOS code. But things won’t stay like this forever, Schneier cautions. His full blog entry can be found here.
